Basic/Clinical Science Session
Impacts of Nicotine, Cannabinoids, and Opioids on Kidney Health
November 09, 2025 | 09:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Location: Room 372A, Convention Center
Session Description
The opioid system is involved in the pathogenesis of hypertensive kidney diseases, and the latest findings report controversial effects of cannabinoids in salt sensitivity. Smoking- and nicotine-related redox remodeling is associated with cardiorenal damage. This opens new avenues of research for therapeutic advances in cardiorenal complications in individuals affected by nicotine and substance abuse.
Learning Objective(s)
- Describe the impacts of nicotine, opioids, and cannabinoids on kidney function and BP regulation
- Evaluate the mechanisms underlying substance abuse-related cardiorenal pathologies and hypertension
- Identify new research directions and therapeutic opportunities for preventing and managing substance abuse-related kidney and cardiovascular diseases
Learning Pathway(s)
- Hypertension and Cardiorenal Disorders
- Kidney Biology and Physiology
