Extracellular Vesicle-Based Therapeutics for CKD: The Way of the Future

Session Description

Interest in extracellular vesicle utility in kidney disease is gaining momentum. This session discusses the use and benefits of extracellular vesicles therapy in the management of chronic kidney diseases of various conditions. Contemporary examples are provided, describing the use of extracellular vesicles in the management of nephrotic diseases and Alport syndrome. This session also addresses the potential use of extracellular vesicles as carriers for target therapy.

  • Summarize the biology of extracellular vesicles, including what they are, how they are formed, and their roles
  • Discuss recent research leveraging kidney progenitor-derived extracellular vesicles for nephrotic syndrome therapy
  • Describe how extracellular vesicles have been used for kidney repair in Alport syndrome
  • Discuss current state-of-the-art methodologies to engineer extracellular vesicles as carriers for drug and RNA therapy to the kidneys
