Basic/Clinical Science Session
CKD in Limited-Resource Settings: Epidemiology, Clinical Presentations, and Treatment
November 07, 2025 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Location: Room 332A, Convention Center
Session Description
This session reviews the etiologies, epidemiologic trends, and clinical management of CKD in limited-resource settings. Experts explore how the environment, climate change, and socioeconomic factors contribute to the burden and management of predialysis CKD. Aspects of APOL1-mediated kidney disease in sub-Saharan Africa are reviewed, where 200+ million people have 1 or more APOL1 renal risk allele. This session also discusses ethical dilemmas and moral issues associated with rationing access to kidney replacement therapies and reviews findings from relevant collaborative CKD studies.
Learning Objective(s)
- Compare the epidemiology of CKD in tropical settings with that in highly resourced countries regarding differing etiologies, prevention, and treatment
- Discuss how the environment, climate change, and socioeconomic factors contribute to CKD burden and how these factors shape the feasibility of recommended management approaches
- Summarize the main findings from large, collaborative studies of CKD in limited-resource settings, including the H3Africa Consortium
- Define moral distress and discuss strategies to mitigate moral distress and ethical dilemmas faced by frontline clinicians when acute and maintenance dialysis must be rationed
