Kidney News Fellowship Program

Accepting applications through April 30, 2024

The ASN Kidney News Editorial Fellows Program is open for application to all fellows with an interest in communicating nephrology advances to Kidney News readers. Applications are due April 30, 2024.

Who can apply? Fellows entering their second, third, or fourth year of fellowship in nephrology with an interest in clinical nephrology, transplantation, basic research (physiology, pharmacology, or pathophysiology) or clinical research (observational research and clinical trials). Applicants with experience in graphical communication (e.g. visual abstracts) are encouraged to apply.

How long is the appointment? Two years. The fellowship will commence on July 1, 2024 and conclude on June 30, 2026.

What are the aims of this fellowship? The Kidney News editorial fellowship program aims to provide early-career nephrologists and scientists with the skills to become strong reviewers and editors. Through the Fellows First column, a regular editorial feature in the magazine, Kidney News strives to prioritize trainees' perspectives and support their editorial and publication endeavors. Specific program aims include:

  • Learning how to critically appraise and edit scientific and medical articles and commentary.
  • Assessing and making editorial decisions.
  • Collaborating with a team of experienced editors.

What are the responsibilities? Editorial Fellows participate in all Kidney News editorial processes, including reviewing articles, developing the Fellows First column, and identifying topics for invited articles and special issues. Specific responsibilities to include:

  • Overseeing the Fellows First column, including suggesting potential topics and authors, inviting authors, reviewing submissions, and working with the author to revise articles according to editorial feedback.
  • Participating in Kidney News editorial calls and contributing, as appropriate, to discussions of Kidney News strategy and invited papers.
  • Suggesting potential topics and/or authors for invited articles and special sections.
  • Providing timely review of at least 1 submission per month as assigned by the Deputy Editor or Editor-in-Chief.
  • Participate in the magazine's social media programs, identifying ways to engage with trainees.
  • In the second year, coordinating one special section on a topic to be jointly determined by Kidney News editors and based on Fellows' areas of expertise.

The time commitment is at least one hour per week for soliciting and editing articles and communicating with authors and Kidney News editorial staff. First-year participants will be provided with a series of training sessions to ensure their familiarity with editorial processes. Periodic "trainee only" meetings with Kidney News senior leadership will be held to discuss specific topics in the editorial process.

Fellows will be assigned to a specific Deputy Editor who will oversee their progress. They will work closely with the Deputy Editor and the Editor-in-Chief.

How do I apply? The following application materials may be submitted below:

  • A brief bio (NIH biosketch or similar format)
  • A detailed CV
  • A commitment and recommendation letter from Division Chief or Program Director of fellowship specifying how you are suited for the position
  • A 200–300-word short editorial on the topic "Training in Nephrology 2024: What can be changed?" One original figure and or a visual abstract may be included. No co-authors are allowed.
