ASN Biography

William M. Bennett, MD, is Medical Director, Transplantation, and Director, Renal Research, at Legacy Health Systems, Portland, Oregon. With more than 50 years of experience, Dr. Bennett is an expert in kidney transplantation.

Dr. Bennett received his medical degree from Northwestern University, Chicago. He was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. Following his residency in internal medicine at Northwestern University, Dr. Bennett served as chief resident, internal medicine at the University of Oregon Medical School, Portland. Dr Bennett completed a fellowship in nephrology at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He retired as a Professor at Oregon Health & Sciences University in 1999. Dr Bennett is the current Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.

Dr. Bennett is an active clinician, researcher and educator. He is board certified and recertified in internal medicine, nephrology, clinical pharmacology and is considered a specialist in clinical hypertension. He has been the principal investigator for multiple clinical studies. He has more than 505 peer-reviewed publications to his credit and has contributed to 183 books and chapters. Dr. Bennett is a Master of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and has been its past president. He is also a fellow of the American Society of Transplantation. Dr. Bennett has been honored for his contributions to the medical profession, including the Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation Jared J. Grantham Distinguished Achievement Award, the Belding Scribner Award of the American Society of Nephrology, the Kidney Association of Oregon First Gift of Life Award, the Medical Research Foundation of Oregon Discovery Award and Prize, the American Association of Kidney Patients Medal of Excellence Award for his commitment to patient care, the Donald W. Seldin Award of the NKF for excellence in clinical nephrology and the Alumnus of the Year for Northwestern University Medical School. He has been identified as a nationally ranked top physician by America’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America.
