Research Interests
Dr. Ikizler's research focuses on mechanisms leading to adverse outcomes in patients with kidney disease, with a specific emphasis on nutritional and metabolic effects of uremia and extracorporeal therapies. His group has delineated mechanisms by which kidney diseases lead to protein and energy wasting, metabolic abnormalities and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Their research informed clinical guidelines on nutritional and metabolic support of patients with acute and chronic kidney disease. His work has identified non-traditional risk factors for CVD in kidney disease, leading to number of randomized clinical trials examining anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant therapies as well as healthy life style interventions.
