About ASN

Brian S. Decker, MD, PharmD

September 25, 1963 - June 6, 2018

Brian Scott Decker, MD, PharmD, MS passed away on June 6, 2018 after a two-year battle with sarcoma at the age of 54. Our community has lost a great friend, mentor, and colleague.

Brian completed degrees in Wildlife Sciences, and then Pharmacy at Purdue. He completed his PharmD degree before medical school at IU. He was a Chief Resident at Wishard in 2003, a Nephrology fellow from 2004-2007, and joined the faculty of the Divisions of Nephrology and Clinical Pharmacology in 2007. While a faculty member, he completed a Clinical Pharmacology Fellowship and a Master's Degree in Clinical Research.

He was triple board certified in Nephrology, Clinical Pharmacology, and Hypertension. He became the Nephrology Fellowship Training Program Director in 2015. He was an avid teacher of pharmacology and pharmacogenomics to trainees from both IU and Purdue. He presented lectures during ASN Kidney week on drug dosing in patients receiving dialysis and on pharmacogenomics and the use in clinical practice. He fostered Nephrology student interest groups through the ASN MAPS program, was on the IU Academy of Teaching Scholars Committee, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the National Kidney Foundation of Indiana, NBME Pharmacology test writing Committee, and a member of the Education Committee for the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He was a lifelong mentor to boy scouts, serving as Head Scoutmaster, and earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Courage and Compassion. Brian approached his life, career and family with these virtues. Dr. Sharon Moe reflects: "He always loved teaching and mentoring and fostered the potential for excellence in everyone. He was a great friend to many, and selfless in his volunteerism. He will be deeply missed." Brian is survived by his wife Peggy of 23 years, and sons Noah (age 17) and Scott (age 19).
