Maintenance of Certification Review

Course Description

Maintenance of Certification (MOC) promotes lifelong learning and the enhancement of the clinical judgment essential for high-quality patient care. In 2014, in addition to reporting board certification, the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) began reporting whether or not all ABIM Board-Certified physicians are “Meeting MOC Requirements” (i.e., continuously engaging in MOC activities). However, on December 16, 2015, ABIM announced that it suspended the Practice Assessment, Patient Voice, and Patient Safety requirement through December 31, 2018. ABIM continues to revise its MOC program based on input from the medical community. ABIM is also implementing a policy of reporting diplomates on its website as “participating in MOC” rather than the previous designation as either “meeting or not meeting MOC requirements.” Certificates are contingent on meeting the MOC requirements including: 1. completing at least one MOC activity to earn MOC points every 2 years; 2. earning 100 points every 5 years with at least 20 points in medical knowledge (points earned every 2 years will also count toward the 5-year requirement); and 3. passing the MOC exam in your specialty(ies) every 10 years (first exam attempt in each certification area earns 20 MOC points).

This program reviews an ABIM Medical Knowledge Module in Internal Medicine (2016 Update), the first iteration of the ASN Kidney Self-Assessment Program (KSAP, Volume 1, Module 1), and the 2016 Hypertension issue of the ASN Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (NephSAP). During the program, cases and questions are presented, and answer options are discussed with audience participation using an audience response system. The discussants review each question and relevant literature. You should not take this course if you have already completed ABIM Medical Knowledge Module—Internal Medicine: 2016 Update; Kidney Self-Assessment Program Volume 1, Module 1; or NephSAP, Volume 16, Number 1, March 2016: Hypertension.

Following this program, participants can earn up to 45 ABIM MOC points in medical knowledge by taking the applicable exams on ASN's and ABIM's websites. To qualify for MOC credit, participants should be ASN members and should be enrolled in the ABIM MOC program. All outlined policies and procedures for claiming ABIM MOC points must be followed. Approximately 6–8 weeks after this program, slides used to illustrate key teaching points are made available to participants online, but answers are not provided.

Course Objective(s)

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1. discuss key aspects of internal medicine and nephrology with case examples; 2. renew and refresh their clinical knowledge, diagnostic, and therapeutic skills in hypertension; and 3. assess their strengths and weaknesses in internal medicine and nephrology.

ASN designates this live activity for a maximum of 15.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM.

Program is subject to change.
