Hemophobia: What Do Patients Really Want on Dialysis

November 17, 2016 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: W187

Session Description

Sometimes, even when CKD/ESRD patients experience very serious complications, they are still reluctant to make a modality decision or to switch modality. This session seeks to understand the facts, fears, hopes, and complex decision-making in patients on PD or hemodialysis (HD), and what is deemed important for them. The importance of individualizing modality choice based on patient preference, life circumstances, and goals is discussed. The nephrologist's view on modality choice and patient outcomes is explored.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. summarize studies comparing survival between HD and PD (strengths and weaknesses); 2. discuss the applicability of key survival and other outcome studies of HD and PD to your contemporary dialysis population; 3. explain various views (patient, health care provider, researcher) on PD and HD as a RRT modality; and 4. describe how patients make decisions about RRT and how to individualize therapy to optimize outcomes.
