Basic/Clinical Science Session

Unfolding the Function of Klotho and FGF23

November 17, 2016 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Location: W181

Session Description

α-Klotho is a type 1 membrane protein expressed in kidney and other tissues including choroid plexus of the brain. The ectodomain of Klotho can be shed into blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid. Membranous Klotho interacts with fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) to function as coreceptors for the hypophosphatemic hormone FGF23. This session discusses several recent important developments in the function of the Klotho–FGF23 axis.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1. describe recent updates in the function of FGF23 production in bone and function of FGF23 in target organs; and 2. discuss recent development in the function of Klotho in the brain and kidney, and how shedding of Klotho ectodomain occurs and is regulated.
