Basic/Clinical Science Session
Maternal and Environmental Factors: Effect on Kidney Formation and Function
November 04, 2023 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Location: Room 105, Pennsylvania Convention Center
Session Description
Much focus has been placed on the genetics of kidney formation, but a more pressing issue is the maternal insults and developmental stressors that occur and how this alters kidney formation and ultimately kidney function. Kidney derangements in children born prematurely include lower kidney volume, worse kidney function, and higher proportion with hypertension or proteinuria. This session increases the knowledge of the audience and presents opportunities and recommendations for early recognition and monitoring in a clinical setting.
Learning Objective(s)
- Explain the mechanisms of kidney injury in children who were born preterm
- Describe the maternal insults that affect kidney function
- Discuss the environmental insults that alter kidney function
- Identify the subtle kidney derangements that need monitoring in childhood due to prenatal insults
Learning Pathway(s)
- Pediatric Nephrology
- Genetic Diseases and Development
