Background
Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) with remote patient management (RPM) is associated with better Clinical outcomes and patient adherence. Integration of a APD RPM with the electronic medical record (EMR) could bring additional advantages for dialysis clinics.
Methods
A time and motion study was conducted before and after the integration of Versia and Sharesource using continuous time methodology in three dialysis clinics in Colombia. We analyzed 245 activities during the before phase and 208 activities in the after phase, with an interval of three months. We also evaluated patient-provider ratios, effective consultation times, and time spent directly interacting with the Sharesource platform.
Results
The ratio between PD patients and nurses was 45:1, and between dialysis patients (PD and HD) and nephrologists was 140:1. Figure 1 shows the output of the Sharesource monitoring platform integrated into Versia. Nephrologists and nurse reduced consultation time and direct interaction with the Sharesource platform. Value stream mapping shows an increase in value-added activities. The reduction in nonproductive activities may be related to better technology integration, reduced duplication of records, and optimization of patient care steps. See Figure 2.
Conclusion
The integration of Sharesource RPM with Versia EMR facilitates improved workflows, mitigates operational burdens, and increases efficiency, all of which are critical in a time-sensitive patient care environment. This can aid in achieving the benefits of APD RPM observed in clinical studies.
