Background
Cancer and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are conditions that increasingly coexist, especially in dialysis patients.
Methods
A multicenter, retrospective, observational study was conducted using secondary data from 9,307 chronic dialysis patients (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis) registered in specialized units in Ecuador. The final sample included 173 patients with a confirmed cancer diagnosis.
Results
Of 8559 patients reported by participating centers (≈40% of the national dialysis population), 2.02% (n = 173) had been diagnosed with cancer. Hemodialysis was
the predominant modality (98.3%). The most frequent cancers were: gynecological (21.4%), genitourinary (20.8%), digestive (15.6%), and hematological (15.0%). The mean age was 71 years, with male predominance (56.1%). 60.1% were in remission, 27.8% were on active treatment, and 9.3% were in palliative care.
Conclusion
This is the first national registry of dialysis patients with cancer in Ecuador, revealing a significant clinical coexistence. Hemodialysis remains the dominant
therapy, with older and male patients being the most affected.
