Background
Physiology is fundamental to medical education. We developed ABC Kidney—an interactive, digital kidey physiology platform. Offering short tutorials and clinical vignettes. Uniquely, it integrates durable learning methods like distributed learning and retrieval practice using interactive quizzes to reinforce core concepts.
Methods
ABC Kidney was offered as a voluntary resource to UCSOM first year medical student renal physiology course, assessing impact on study habits, course attitudes, and knowledge acquisition. Data analytics provided tool use metrics. We conducted post-course survey and focus groups. Chat GPT 4o performed thematic coding of free text and focus groups.
Results
There were 103 survey respondents. Of those, 32% reported using ABC Kidney. Most (54.5%) spent 30-60 minutes adn 12% spent 61-120 minutes on the platform. Most (88%) found ABC Kidney to be very/extremely easy to use, intuitive and to have clarity of content. The survey reported the most helpful sections were; multiple choice questions (37.5%), Interactive quizzes (28%), Animated tutorials (22%) and Clinical correlations (12.5%). In the survey free text, ABC Kidney’s impact on studying were (# responses); improved kidney physiology understanding (27), less time searching for outside resources (16), more efficient studying (9). For the focus group (N=4), top topics were (# responses); practice question emphasis (12), interactivity (11), early phase utility (8), desire for more content (7), favoring ABC Kidney over other tools (6), and integration into prework (6). Technical issues were cited.
Conclusion
ABC Kidney was perceived favorably amongst the medical students using it, especially practice questions and interactive features, which helped solidify complex renal physiology concepts. Participants found it most useful at the start and end of the course, and many recommended integrating it into pre-work to enhance engagement and foundational understanding.
