  • The (Re)Building a Kidney (RBK) Consortium

The (Re)Building a Kidney (RBK) project is a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases funded consortium meant to drive fundamental research of the kidney with goals to promote the regeneration of nephrons, and develop strategies for engineering therapeutic tissues. RBK projects investigate both development and repair processes in humans and rodent models through transcriptional and proteomic analysis of kidney cell types, bioengineered materials and bioprinting and de-cellularized scaffold approaches, directed differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells, and human kidney organoid models. These studies further our understanding of the processes of complex organ formation and guide efforts to create kidney tissues in vitro. Through interactions promoted within the consortium, and the addition of new work funded by the consortium each year, the RBK is meant to function as a dynamic and evolving group incorporating new data and ideas continuously and making that work available for the research community quickly through the database and website

  • RBK is supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
