Description

Kidney diseases, both acute and chronic, are a public health challenge in the United States due to their high incidence and prevalence, low awareness, and high associated morbidity, mortality, and cost. To address this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Initiative in 2006, established through a congressional mandate to develop a robust public health strategy for CKD. A key component of this initiative is the Kidney Disease Surveillance System (KDSS), the first and most comprehensive U.S. system dedicated to monitoring CKD in its earlier stages, well before it progresses to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Its mission is to raise awareness and drive action among individuals, communities, policymakers, insurers, researchers, clinicians, and health systems.
KDSS uses the national data systems shown in the Figure to provide insights into kidney disease trends for all age groups, now featured on its updated 2025 website. This site offers an overview on major topics related to CKD, including CKD prevalence and incidence, awareness, risk factors, health outcomes, quality of care, and social determinants of health, with emphasis on simple yet appealing data visualizations.
Through the website and other outreach efforts, KDSS supports the "Advancing American Kidney Health" initiative’s goals of reducing kidney disease risks and promoting early detection and intervention.
CDC’s Kidney Disease Surveillance System is a tool in raising awareness and early action for preventing CKD and its progression. By highlighting data and trends, KDSS empowers stakeholders to implement effective public health policies and actions with the goal of advancing the prevention and management of earlier stages of kidney disease, reducing the disease burden and progression, and improving health outcomes nationwide.
