Background

Complement 3 glomerulopathy (C3G) and immune complex-mediated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (IC-MPGN) are rare chronic kidney diseases associated with high patient burden and poor prognosis when sub optimally treated. Patients often face challenges in tracking their medication, symptoms and laboratory results, while their care teams are challenged with the lack of longitudinal, multi-sourced, patient-reported information, making treatment monitoring complex. Therefore, we aimed to develop a digital health solution that addresses this unmet need.

Methods

The concept was developed with patients and disease area specialists, during qualitative interviews. The application was developed according to applicable medical device regulations and tested with users.

Results

Following 24 hours of interviews and design of more than 150 screens, we developed florio NEPHREE - a CE-marked medical device intended for people with C3G or IC-MPGN and their healthcare teams, to alleviate the daily burden of disease. It consists of a patient-facing smartphone application that allows for the recording and organization of disease-related symptoms, medication, and laboratory results. A web-based dashboard allows healthcare professionals (HCPs) to review contextualized treatment information in real time. Patients and HCPs can view individual treatment outcomes, personalized trends and analyses, to facilitate patient-clinician discussions and shared decision-making. At the time of submission, florio NEPHREE was available in several countries in Europe, with additional geographic expansion planned.

Conclusion

This work demonstrates the feasibility of developing a disease-specific digital healthcare solution for people with rare kidney diseases and their HCPs. Future evaluation will further assess user engagement and usability, and its impact on outcomes in real-world clinical practice.

Acknowledgment
