Background

Lipid profiles of MHD patients from 17 centers were analyzed to identify prevailing patterns.

Methods

A total of 896 low-income (LI) and 148 middle-income (MI) MHD patients were studied. Data included dialysis frequency, vintage, comorbidities, diet, statin use, and lipid parameters (TC, TGL, HDL, LDL).

Results

LI( Low Income) patients had a mean age of 50.06 ± 11.31 years (716 M, 180 F), while MI( Middle Income) patients had a mean age of 59.82 ± 13.87 years (96 M, 52 F). Statin use was 25.5%. Common comorbidities included HTN (93.5%), DM (38.2%), CVD (10%), and hypothyroidism (6.5%). Most patients had normal TC (~78% LI, ~73% MI). Elevated TGL (>200 mg/dl) was more common in MI patients (~26% vs ~13%). Low HDL (<35 mg/dl) was the major abnormality (~36% in both groups). LDL was generally controlled (~59% LI, ~64% MI with LDL <100 mg/dl). Thrice-weekly dialysis showed slightly better TGL and HDL profiles, while longer dialysis duration worsened TC, TGL, and HDL abnormalities.

Conclusion

MHD patients from LI and MI groups largely had near-normal lipid profiles, with dyslipidemia seen in a smaller subset. Low HDL was the commonest abnormality, while elevated triglycerides were more frequent in MI patients. Indian dietary and metabolic factors may contribute to these variations. Longitudinal studies are needed to assess long-term implications.
