Background
Patients with HD have greater hospitalization rates than the general population, raising morbidity and mortality in ESRD. Our goal is to characterise hospitalization causes, rates, and outcomes using data from a nationwide renal health network in Mexico between 2020 and 2024.
Methods
A retrospective observational analysis of 3210 hospital admissions from 2020 to 2024. Hospitalisation rates per patient-year, length of stay, diagnostic categories, clinical outcomes, and demographics were evaluated.Kruskar-Wallis test is used to determine whether the median age for each cause category differs.
Results
3210 admissions, totalling 2221 pts; 30%(989) were multiple admissions and 70% were first-time hospitalizations. 53 yo was the median age at hospital admission (IQR: 36-65). 71%(2288) were men and 29%(934) women. Top causes were Cardiovascular (29.9%),infectious (22.3%) and surgery (8.4%). In 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024, the hospitalization rate per p-y was 0.20, 0.36, 0.42, 0.31, and 0.25, respectively.
Average stay in days per p-y: 1.86 in 2020, 3.14 in 2021, 3.84 in 2022, 2.49 in 2023, and 1.93 in 2024.In terms of the reasons for discharge, 2,632 (81%) were improvement, 437(14%) death, 119(4%) max benefit and 43(1%) voluntary discharge.
Conclusion
In comparison with global registries, we found a lower hospitalization rate per patient-year and a shorter average length of hospital stay per patient-year.These findings highlight an urgent need for targeted preventive strategies for cardiovascular and infectious disease and stronger outpatient care to reduce admissions and improve survival in ESRD.
