Background
Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, are essential to the multidisciplinary IgA Nephropathy (IgAN) care team. As the therapeutic landscape expands to include novel B-cell modulating therapies, APPs require clinical competence to support evolving referral and management pathways. This initiative evaluated whether online Continuing Medical Education (CME) could address foundational knowledge gaps and prepare the APP frontline for a new era of targeted care strategies.
Methods
A multi-modal online curriculum launched in July 2024 utilized expert roundtables, case studies, and motion graphics to translate pathophysiology and clinical trial data for APPs. Educational impact was measured via matched pre-/post-assessments through October 2025. Statistical significance was determined using McNemar’s test (P < .05). Analysis included up to n=477 APPs.
Results
Baseline data confirmed APPs are highly motivated, driving a 3,802% increase in IgAN content consumption compared to baseline. Post-instruction, significant gains occurred across five key domains:
1) Pathophysiology: APPs achieved a 24% improvement in understanding underlying disease mechanisms from a baseline of 49% (P < .01)
2) Clinical Presentation: APPs demonstrated a robust 170% relative increase in disease recognition from an 20% baseline (P < .001)
3) Emerging Treatment Pathways: Comprehension of novel therapeutic targets improved by 100% from a 20% baseline (P < .001)
4) Clinical Trial Outcomes: APPs gained 48% in their ability to interpret the latest evidence from a modest 29% baseline (P < .001).
Conclusion
Online CME is essential for empowering APPs within the evolving IgAN landscape. While foundational understanding solidified, post-education confidence in their understanding of B-cell targeting therapies and the role of the B-cell pathway in IgAN remained modest at 6%, highlighting a persistent need for future education to not only address foundational aspects of IgAN and the B-cell pathway, but also empower them to integrate these novel therapies as they become readily available. Future education must prioritize evidence-based strategies that harmonize multidisciplinary collaboration and move the entire care team toward confident, long-term management of IgAN patients.
