Critical Care Nephrology: 2026 Update
Course Description
This intensive program equips nephrology professionals and critical care clinicians with practical, organ-focused kidney management strategies for the intensive care unit (ICU). Through case-driven lectures and an interactive panel, experts synthesize physiology and evidence to guide bedside decisions on fluid and vasopressor management in cardiogenic and septic shock, AKI prevention in cardiac surgery, CKRT and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) integration, safe dialysis for neurocritical patients and those with liver failure, and when and how to discontinue KRT.
Participants learn a pragmatic framework for selecting modality and CKRT dose, personalizing mean arterial pressure (MAP) and perfusion targets, appropriately applying emerging immunomodulatory blood-purification tools, and using biomarkers and recovery signals to optimize outcomes. This program is ideal for intensivists, nephrology professionals, ICU pharmacists, and advanced practice providers seeking immediately implementable protocols and decision pathways. Course Objective(s)
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) describe organ-specific hemodynamic and perfusion principles to differentiate causes of AKI in cardiogenic and septic shock, and select appropriate fluid, vasopressor, or ultrafiltration strategies; 2) discuss KRT modality and CKRT dosing, including anticoagulation and antibiotic dosing considerations, in complex ICU scenarios such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)-ECMO, neurocritical illness, and liver failure; 3) explain prevention bundles, biomarker-informed risk stratification, and recovery criteria to guide AKI prevention, timing of KRT initiation, and safe discontinuation, along with planning for post-ICU follow-up; and 4) evaluate the role of emerging immunomodulatory and adsorptive extracorporeal therapies in septic and inflammatory AKI, and identify situations when these approaches may be appropriate in clinical practice.
