Basic/Clinical Science Session
Sex Matters: Intersection of Hormonal Differences and Kidney Health, Including the Sharon R. Silbiger, MD, Endowed Lectureship
October 24, 2026 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Location: Room 603, Convention Center
Session Description
Women's kidney health is shaped by a complex interplay of biological, hormonal, and clinical factors. Integrating basic, translational, and clinical perspectives, this session examines how reproductive transitions, reproductive history, and exogenous hormone exposures influence kidney function across the lifespan. Emerging insights into reproductive physiology, sex hormones, pregnancy-related complications, and the biology of AKI are highlighted to improve individualized risk stratification and management of kidney and cardiovascular disease in women.
ASN gratefully acknowledges Women in Nephrology (WIN) and its contributors for support of the Silbiger Endowed Lectureship.
Learning Objective(s)
- Explain the key mechanisms by which renal estrogen signaling, reproductive history, and postmenopausal hormonal changes contribute to the pathogenesis of hypertension
- Evaluate the benefits, risks, and clinical considerations of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy in patients across the spectrum of kidney diseases
- Summarize current evidence on the mechanistic pathways, diagnostic strategies, and long-term prognostic implications of preeclampsia
- Describe sex-specific biological determinants of vulnerability and resilience in AKI
Learning Pathway(s)
- CKD Non-Dialysis
- Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Health
