Clinical Practice Session
Value-Based Care in Nephrology: Slow Death or Lessons to Learn?
October 23, 2026 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Location: Room 603, Convention Center
Session Description
The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sunset the Kidney Care First program, while continuing the Comprehensive Kidney Care Contracting (CKCC) model, albeit with major changes. More than 55% of Medicare-eligible beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage, and many are enrolled in value-based care (VBC) programs. Most Medicare Advantage and CMS plans intend to continue and expand VBC in nephrology. The session describes the presumed reasons for changes to CMS models; existing models, including CKCC, Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA), and Medicare Advantage; the challenges of these models and how to overcome them; and a roadmap for nephrology professionals to be the "captains of the ship."
ASN thanks the ASN Quality Committee for assistance with this session.
