Green, Prepared, and Resilient: Nephrology in the Era of Climate Extremes

October 24, 2026 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Location: Room 501, Convention Center

Session Description

Climate change is transforming kidney care by driving more frequent and severe natural disasters, intensifying heatwaves and wildfires, and exposing the substantial environmental footprint of dialysis and nephrology practice. Patients with kidney diseases are uniquely vulnerable to climate-related disruptions, while dialysis care itself consumes vast amounts of water, energy, and pharmaceuticals. This comprehensive session integrates green nephrology, climate-related health impacts, and disaster preparedness to provide a practical roadmap for climate-resilient kidney care.

ASN thanks the ASN Emergency Preparedness & Response/Humanitarian Kidney Support Program for assistance with this session.

Learning Objective(s)

  • Identify major sources of environmental impact in nephrology and dialysis care, including water, energy, and pharmaceutical waste
  • Describe the effects of heatwaves, wildfires, and climate-driven natural disasters on patients with kidney diseases and dialysis outcomes
  • Develop practical strategies to reduce the environmental footprint of dialysis and nephrology practice while maintaining patient safety and quality of care
  • Evaluate preparedness strategies for dialysis facilities, home dialysis programs, and patients during disasters and extreme weather events
  • Summarize patient and clinician perspectives to improve communication, resilience, and continuity of kidney care during humanitarian crises

Learning Pathway(s)

  • Dialysis
