Clinical Practice Session
To Biopsy or Not to Biopsy?
October 22, 2026 | 02:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Location: Room 605, Convention Center
Session Description
Kidney biopsy is required to diagnose most glomerular diseases. However, a kidney biopsy may not be required to diagnose PLA2R-associated membranous nephropathy. The role of protocol and repeat kidney biopsies in IgAN, lupus nephritis, and ANCA-associated vasculitis is also controversial. The session addresses the role of repeat and protocol kidney biopsies in these diseases and the clinical and laboratory markers that can help guide the decision to biopsy or not to biopsy.
Learning Objective(s)
- Evaluate the role of kidney biopsy in lupus nephritis, including protocol and repeat biopsies
- Define the role of kidney biopsy in membranous nephropathy, including PLA2R-positive and -negative membranous nephropathy
- Describe the role of kidney biopsy in IgAN, including repeat biopsies
- Articulate the role of kidney biopsy in ANCA-associated vasculitis, including prognostic scoring
Learning Pathway(s)
- Pathology
- Glomerular Diseases
