Translational Session
Revitalizing the Use of AKI Biomarkers in Routine Clinical Care
October 22, 2026 | 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Location: Four Seasons Ballroom 2, Convention Center
Session Description
This session explores the renewed momentum to implement AKI biomarkers in routine clinical care, driven by recent evidence from studies. The session examines how biomarkers can enhance perioperative risk classification, improve prognostic assessment during and after AKI, and enable biologically grounded endophenotyping that may ultimately guide targeted interventions. Experts explore remaining evidence gaps, the challenges of incorporating biomarkers into guidelines and routine use, and how to design pragmatic implementation trials.
Learning Objective(s)
- Describe the clinical roles of AKI biomarkers in early detection, perioperative risk stratification, prognostication, and biologically informed endophenotyping across the AKI continuum
- Evaluate how emerging evidence, including recent clinical trials and case vignettes, demonstrates the added value of AKI biomarkers over traditional measures such as serum creatinine and urine output
- Analyze barriers to implementing AKI biomarkers in routine clinical practice and identify key principles for designing pragmatic trials and implementation strategies that promote guideline adoption and clinical actionability
