Clinical Practice Session
Key Updates in Kidney Transplantation Clinical Practice
October 25, 2026 | 09:30 AM - 11:30 AM
Location: Room 401, Convention Center
Session Description
Managing patients with failing kidney allografts poses challenges, including timing of dialysis reinitiation, immunosuppression management, and relisting. KDIGO guidelines include recommendations for post-transplant anemia and the use of novel therapies. The BK virus (BKV) remains a challenge, and recent clinical trial data provide guidance on best practices. Advances have reshaped the landscape of care for people living with HIV. Under the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act, kidney transplants from donors with HIV to recipients living with HIV have moved from research to standard clinical practice.
ASN thanks the AST Kidney-Pancreas Community of Practice for assistance with this session.
Learning Objective(s)
- Identify a failing kidney allograft, explain the approach to reinitiating dialysis, and list considerations for re-transplant
- Describe the concepts and research from the KDIGO guidelines from the ESKD/CKD population that are applicable to post-transplant anemia management
- Summarize the state of clinical trial data over the last five years regarding the management of BKV and disease
- Outline current evidence and clinical practice in kidney transplantation for people living with HIV, and summarize survival, graft function, and infectious disease outcomes for kidney transplantation, including outcomes from donors with HIV to recipients living with HIV
