Advances in Research Conference 2026: Targeting Therapeutics to the Kidneys

October 21, 2026 | 07:00 AM - 05:10 PM

Location: Room TBD, Convention Center

Session Description

This program addresses the complexities and innovations in directing therapeutics specifically to the kidneys. It provides basic background on the kidney proximal tubule and the use of megalin-mediated internalization for targeted drug delivery to this nephron segment. The discussion includes mechanisms underlying adeno-associated virus (AAV) and nanoparticle targeting, as well as barriers and limitations that affect the selectivity and efficacy of kidney-targeted treatments. The objectives include understanding the basic biology of these pathways, appreciating technological advances and challenges in the field, and enhancing knowledge about the strategic application of these therapies.

Note: Continuing education credits are not being offered for this program.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) describe the basic biology of the proximal tubule endocytic pathway and the potential for megalin-mediated internalization of targeted therapeutics; 2) discuss the mechanisms of AAV and nanoparticle targeting; and 3) explain the barriers and limitations that affect the selectivity and efficacy of kidney targeting.
