Course Description
Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is designed to answer focused clinical questions at the bedside and to guide patient management. In nephrology practice, multiorgan POCUS is an invaluable tool for evaluating AKI and complex fluid and electrolyte disorders. This program introduces participants to key sonographic applications pertinent to nephrology and offers hands-on experience to help build confidence in performing scans at their own institutions. Mentored hands-on practice is the most effective way to learn both the psychomotor and cognitive pattern-recognition aspects of POCUS. The curriculum is approximately equally divided between didactic sessions and hands-on experiences and focuses on foundational imaging skills. Advanced Doppler applications, such as venous excess ultrasound (VExUS), are not covered in this introductory course.
Space is limited to 80 participants. Participants will be split into 2 groups onsite. Both groups will experience the same lectures and hands-on workshops.
ASN designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Course Objective(s)
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) explain the fundamental principles of ultrasound image generation, orientation, and optimization; 2) describe common abnormalities encountered in kidney, lung, and focused cardiac ultrasonography; and 3) develop proficiency in acquiring high-quality ultrasound images suitable for diagnostic interpretation.
