Onconephrology in 2026: New Therapies, Opportunities, and Challenges

The advent of engineered cellular therapies, biologics, and targeted therapies over the past decade has revolutionized the landscape of cancer treatments, greatly expanding options and improving outcomes for patients with cancer who also have kidney diseases. This program provides updates on the opportunities and challenges of managing these patients in this remarkable era of better cancer-directed diagnostics and therapeutics. Emphasizing the multidisciplinary nature of onconephrology, experts in nephrology, transplant nephrology, pathology, and pharmacology share updates and insights through case-based discussions and debate formats to develop a working knowledge on how to evaluate and treat patients in this rapidly evolving field. Topics include new developments in the treatment of plasma cell dyscrasias, radioligand therapies, the role of complement regulation and inhibition in atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS)/thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), and the evaluation and management of kidney transplant recipients with cancer.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: 1) describe the latest therapeutic options and improved outcomes for plasma cell dyscrasias, as well as insights into emerging diagnostic challenges in this field; 2) identify the role of complement regulation and inhibition in thrombotic microangiopathies caused by cancer itself and by cancer-directed treatments; 3) describe patterns of kidney injury and electrolyte disturbances caused by cancer itself and by immunotherapies, cellular therapies, radioligand therapies, and other modern cancer therapies, including the use of emerging biomarkers and new imaging approaches; and 4) discuss the areas of ongoing debate in onconephrology and transplant onconephrology, as well as questions for future research.
