Description

Transplant programs vary in expertise and outcomes which makes it challenging for patients with end stage kidney disease to select programs best suited to their clinical profile. Previous studies show that patients usually rely on their community nephrologist to refer them to a particular transplant program, however the community nephrologist may not have the expertise to guide the patient to the program best suited to their specific patient. We plan to test a patient-centered decision aid, available through a website, designed to assist patients to select programs tailored to their clinical profile [Figure 1] [Figure 2]. The data for the decision aid was provided by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR). The multi-center, randomized controlled trial of kidney transplant candidates will be conducted; one group will be shown the existing SRTR report cards and the other group will be shown the new patient centered report cards presented as a decision aid on the website. The primary outcome will be the comprehension of the informed choice of transplant programs which are tailored to an individual’s clinical profile. The decision aid was designed as a tool to empower patients to effectively navigate the health system of transplant programs with varying candidate acceptance criteria, improve satisfaction with the program selection process, and improve access to the waiting list.
