Description

Physical inactivity is a determinant of poor clinical outcomes across the spectrum of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Exercise interventions have been successful in improving dimensions of quality of life and physical function for people with CKD in the short term; however, these findings have not translated into the adoption of exercise into routine clinical practice. The lack of clinical exercise programs can be attributed in part, to the lack of robust studies, which raises doubt on the validity of the findings. To define the role of exercise in the management of CKD, The Global Renal Exercise Working Group (GREX) was formed in 2015. GREX is a group of over 100 researchers and clinicians from more than 20 countries. The overarching objective of GREX is to foster research collaboration and innovation across the disciplines of nephrology, exercise, nutrition, and psychology to develop effective and feasible strategies to improve health outcomes in people with CKD. A shared perspective among members is that a single approach to exercise prescription will not adequately address the myriad of health concerns in CKD patients. Instead, more personalized approaches that include physical activity as a component of a comprehensive behavior change intervention is needed. The primary activities of GREX to date are: 1) Meeting at international conferences 1 – 2 times/year; 2) Conducting a Delphi Survey to identify research priorities for exercise in CKD among a broad range of stakeholders; 3) Organizing an International Conference to foster collaborative research on exercise in CKD (in Calgary, Alberta, November 2019); and 4) Establishing formal relationships with Regional and International Societies. GREX is dedicated to identifying novel strategies to address the complex heath concerns of those with CKD, and welcome researchers and clinicians who wish to participate in these efforts.
