Description
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is estimated to affect about 37 million adults in the United States and is one of the leading causes of death. In recognition of CKD as a non-communicable disease of public health importance, the CDC launched its national public health surveillance of CKD initiative in 2006.
The CDC CKD Surveillance System, (www.cdc.gov/ckd/surveillance) identifies CKD trends; highlighting disparities, hotspots and risk factors; while raising awareness and stimulating public health interest and action in kidney disease. New this year, designed to enhance user experience of the project website are highly interactive charts with hover and display function identifying data point and confidence intervals and interactive charting formats. The site has major biannual updates and contains over 200 graphs and tables from over 20 data sources and offers 6 topic areas with accompanying indicators.
CKD surveillance topic areas of disease burden, risk factors, awareness, processes of care, outcomes, and health system capacity have been enhanced with new indicators, e.g., “CKD Prevalence by Diabetes Mellitus Status “and new data sources, such as Medicaid claims data to enhance surveillance of the disadvantaged and younger populations. Additional data are obtained from general population surveys, (e.g. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)) and health system data, (e.g., Veterans Affairs - VA 100% data; 5% Medicare sample, and commercial health plan – ClinformaticsTM).
The Surveillance System now offers new interactive prediction tools including calculators estimating probability of having kidney disease and the predicted probability of reaching kidney failure. Another addition is the Disparities Explorer, depicting health disparities in health outcomes seen across segments of the population.
In alignment with ASN’s mission to prevent, treat and cure kidney disease, the CKD Surveillance System is a major component of CDC’s CKD Initiative designed to raise awareness, promote early diagnosis, and encourage upstream prevention with the goal of improving care and outcomes for people with kidney disease.
